NRPA Programs

River Watch: Since 1992, NRPA’s volunteer river monitors have tested water in Narrow River and its major freshwater inputs from May-October as part of URI Watershed Watch. We now monitor the health of the Narrow River Watershed (Pettaquamscutt Estuary) at 14 sites and share our findings with the public and other watershed partners.

Lesa Meng Scholarships: Every year, NRPA awards a college scholarship to three or four seniors graduating from high schools in the Narrow River Watershed. Now named in honor of an NRPA Board Member who passed away in 2006, the scholarships are awarded based on student’s environmentally oriented activities in and out of school, the quality of an original essay, the student’s Science teacher’s recommendation and academic achievement in math and science courses. Since 1993, NRPA has awarded over $52,000 in college scholarships to local students.

Science Fair Awards: In order to encourage the curiosity of young scientists and to help them gain respect for the environment, NRPA has judged science fairs at high and middle schools located in towns in the watershed for NRPA Science Fair Awards since 1989.
